NEW YORK – When Ryan Harrison was 11 years old, he entered the Shreveport (La.) City Championships and reached the final, where he lost to his father, Pat.
When he was 12, Harrison beat his father for the first time. Pat Harrison later became the head pro at John Newcombe’s Tennis Academy in New Braunfels, Texas, where the family moved and his son is full-time coach.
And on Wednesday, Harrison, now an 18-year-old qualifier, scored the defining victory of his young tennis career by knocking off No. 15 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the second round of the U.S. Open.
