Dominic Cheek, a 6-foot-5 wing from St. Anthony of Jersey City, will visit Kansas Oct. 17 for “Late Night in the Phog,” the team’s Midnight Madness event, according to a source close to the situation.
Xavier Henry and Daniel Orton are also supposed to visit Kansas that weekend.
Cheek previously said he would take officials to Kansas, Villanova, Wake Forest and Tennessee, leaving one for UConn, Memphis, Indiana, Pitt, Rutgers or Seton Hall.
Kansas head coach Bill Self and assistant Joe Dooley had an in-home visit last week with Cheek, his uncle, Omari Knight, and St. Anthony head coach Bob Hurley.
“It was good,” Knight said by phone. “We had a lot of conversations about Dominic going to the school. Everything sounds good. We’ve got to still try to take a visit (to Kansas) to get the overall picture of the school. It looked good and they have (former St. Anthony standout) Tyshawn (Taylor) over there.
“He wants to go visit,” Knight said.
Cheek, a first-team All-State selection last year, will have the Villanova coaches in tonight for an in-home visit. Rutgers head coach Fred Hill was in on Sunday. Following Villanova, Memphis comes in Sept. 28 and Pitt Sept. 30, Hurley said.
Speaking of Kansas, they could land a tremendous recruiting class here if John Wall also picks the Jayhawks.
The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2009 said he thoroughly enjoyed his weekend visit, which also featured Thomas Robinson of Brewster Academy and Orton, and included the basketball team receiving its NCAA championship rings.
“The entire weekend at Kansas was great,” Wall told JayhawkSlant.com. “On Saturday, we got up and ate as a group. We also played a game of pickup and then got around and went to the football game. We did everything together as a group. We went to the ring ceremony as a group, hung out Saturday morning as a group and went to the football game as a group.
“I did talk to Coach Self a little bit,” he added. “He was just at my house last week for an in-home visit, so we talked a lot earlier in the week. It was great to see him again during my visit. Coach Self let me know how much he wants to coach me. He said that nothing would be guaranteed with playing time, but he wants me to come to Kansas. Coach Self wants me to come to Kansas and he wants to prepare me for the next level.”
