Jay Murphy has one son at Florida and another in the thick of the recruiting process.

But even he has never seen anything like the turnout for Sunday’s open gym at the St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass.

According to the New England Recruiting Report, the head coaches who turned out combined to win the last 11 NCAA championships.

Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010), Roy Williams of North Carolina (2005 & 2009), Bill Self of Kansas (2008), Billy Donovan of Florida (2006 & 2007), and Jim Calhoun of UConn (1999 & 2004) were all in the gym.

West Virginia’s Bob Huggins, Villanova’s Jay Wright, North Carolina State’s Sidney Lowe, Boston College’s Steve Donahue, Michigan’s John Beilein, and Stanford’s Johnny Dawkins were also on hand, the Website reported.

“It’s an interesting scenario,” Murphy said by phone. “They all know each other. They’re all in same fraternity. They end up chatting with each other.”

Alex Murphy, Jay’s middle son and the younger brother of Florida’s Erik Murphy, is a 6-foot-8 small forward ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2012 at his position.

His teammate, Kaleb Tarczewski, is a 7-foot center also ranked among the Top 10 at his position in that class.

“Most teams are there for both [players],” Jay Murphy said of the coaching turnout.

Alex told the NERR his list included Arizona, Boston College, Butler, Duke, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, Syracuse, Texas, Villanova, and West Virginia

“I think he said it could be next month or it could be next year [when he commits] but I think before the season starts, he’s probably going to narrow down his list,” Jay said.

St. Mark’s opens the season Nov. 20 at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Conn.

“I don’t know if that will be five or eight but It won’t be 15, I can tell you that,” Jay Murphy said of his son’s potential shortened list. “You don’t want to waste people’s time. This way he can focus on his season and do some further investigating in these schools and coaches.”

As for any kind of list of favorites at this point, Jay added: “I think it’s wide open. I think in his mind there’s a little bit of a pecking order but we will [have a list] next month.”

As for Tarczewski, he told the NERR he has no list at this point.

“I don’t really have too much of a list right now,” Tarczewski told the site.  “I’m going to start narrowing the list down soon, but right now I’m pretty much still open.”
