WASHINGTON, D.C. — It may be the middle of March Madness, but that hasn’t stopped the Hurley brothers from recruiting to Wagner College.
As first reported on my Twitter, Jonathon Williams, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound wing from City College of San Francisco, verbally committed to the Staten Island school and will have two years of Division 1 eligibility left.
Williams also had offers from Seattle University, Jackson State and Idaho but chose the Staten Island school because of his familiarity with Wagner coach Dan Hurley. Williams first met Hurley at a basketball camp in the Poconos during his junior year at Kennedy High School in Richmond, Calif.
“I chose them because of the Hurleys,” Williams said by phone. “I have a really good relationship with them. I’ve know them for a long time. I just felt it would be a good place for me.”
Williams was the Co-MVP of the Coast Conference North this season and averaged 13 points and eight rebounds.
“He’s a really good player,” San Francisco coach Justin Labagh said. “He can score in a bunch of different ways, from 15 feet and in and off the dribble. He can shoot the set shot and the 3-point shot. He’s really good off the dribble and a really back-to-the-basket player.
“If he stuck around he’d probably end up in the Pac-10 or Big 12.”
Williams joins a 2011 recruiting class that includes 6-8 big man Eugene McCrory of Central Jersey Each One Teach One, 6-7 wing Mario Moody of East Orange, N.J. and 5-11 point guard Marcus Burton of Charlotte, N.C.
The Seahawks also have a commitment from 6-8 2012 junior Mike Aaman of Raritan (N.J.) High.
Williams said he hopes to help Wagner make the NCAA Tournament out of the Northeast Conference.
“Yes,” he said, “I’m definitely trying to help them get as far as I can.”
