Kemba Walker is expected to announce his intention to head to the NBA during a press conference Tuesday at 3 p.m. that will air live on SNY.
Walker, a 6-foot-1 junior guard from The Bronx, is set to graduate on May 8 in three years. DraftExpress.com projects him as the No. 6 pick in the June Draft.
“He is a Top 10 pick,” one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv. “He’s five to 10 on most people’s boards.”
Walker’s stock rose dramatically after he led UConn to 11 straight postseason victories, winning five games in the Big East tournament in five days and then guiding the Huskies to their third NCAA championship since 1999 with a 53-41 victory over Butler on April 4.
He came in second in the AP National Player of the Year voting to BYU’s Jimmer Fredette.
“Is he going to get any higher?” UConn coach Jim Calhoun asked Dan Patrick last week on his radio show. “Is he going to get in a place any much better than this? I don’t think so. I think his marketability is incredible.
“Here’s the single most important think to me, personally. Second after him taking care of his family for the future. Very simply: Is he ready? And he’s more than ready. He’s an incredible guy and an incredible leader and an incredible player.”
Earlier this year, Walker told SNY.tv he took extra classes over the summer in order to graduate and get done with school in three years.
“I just want to get school over with, to tell you the truth,” Walker told SNY.tv. “I’m not a big fan of school, so I just want to get it over with.”
