It only took Sterling Gibbs one visit to Texas to make his decision.
The former Maryland signee announced for Texas following a weekend visit there.
“I have a great relationship with coach Rob Lanier,” said Gibbs, a 6-foot-1 guard out of Seton Hall Prep. “I’ve known him since middle school. My family trusts him.”
Lanier recruited Gibbs at Florida before moving to Texas.
UConn, UCLA and Texas Tech were among those interested in Gibbs, but he chose to team with Findlay Prep point guard Myck Kabongo in a backcourt that lost freshman Cory Joseph to the NBA.
“I think they’re compatible,” New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski said. “Myck Kabongo is a real point guard. Sterling Gibbs is just a guard. He’s a combination guard. Because of his size people have projected him as a point guard.
“He’s a good 3-point shooter, he’s a solid, solid player. I think they could play together. He’s a solid player who’s a four-year player who will be a contributor to their program.
“After what they have lost, to be able to pick up a Sterling Gibbs this late in the game, they’re very fortunate.”
GOMEZ TO IONAJosh Gomez, a 6-10, 220-pound center from Rice High School, has committed to Iona.
“I liked the coaching staff,” he said by text. “They really wanted me. They want to work with me to make me reach my full potential and they said I’m going to come in and play as a freshman.”
“He’s a good shooter for his size,” added Rice assistant Kimani Young. “He runs pretty well, is a good shot-blocker and rebounder. His best basketball is ahead of him.
“It’s a great opportunity for him,” Young added. “He’s going into a winning situation where he’s going to have the luxury of learning and growing and getting better. He’s going to a great coaching staff that’s done well with big men in the past. He’s going to have a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. That’s all you can ask for.”
Iona also hosted 6-5 Terry Brutus, a 2011 small forward from Spring Valley (N.Y.), on Monday and has one scholarship remaining.
