James Robinson, the Rivals No. 8 point guard in the Class of 2012 out of DeMatha (Md.) Catholic, will visit Pittsburgh later this month and then expects to make a decision shortly thereafter.
“I’m visiting Pittsburgh on Aug. 20,” he said by phone from the Nike Global Challenge in Hillsboro, Ore., where he’s playing with Team USA East.
Robinson posted 11 points and six assists as USA East beat Taiwan, 89-79, on Friday.
The 6-foot-3 Robinson is down to a Final 3 of of Pittsburgh, Virginia and Notre Dame. (Miami was crossed off after the recent scandal.)
“I already took unofficials to each of the other three schools and so I just think it would be smart to visit Pittsburgh,” he said.
Robinson says he has “no leader now,” but hopes to decide “as soon as possible.”
“I’m not going to rush the decision but at the same time I’m not going to drag the process out,” he said.
Robinson has paid attention to the last two Pitt point guards, Levance Fields and Ashton Gibbs, now entering his senior season.
“Those two point guards, when they came in to to Jamie Dixon’s system they weren’t really superstars but they worked hard and the coaching staff was able to develop them as players,” he said. “I’m going to work hard and let coach Dixon develop my game.”
As for his senior season, Robinson wants to help DeMatha win another WCAC Championship. They beat arch-rival Gonzaga, 51-48, last season to win their third straight title.
“Just win the championship,” Robinson said.
DeMatha is also set to meet Kyle Anderson and St. Anthony in the Cancer Research Classic Jan. 7 in Wheeling, West Va.
St. Anthony crushed DeMatha, 75-25, behind 28 points from current Rutgers frosh Myles Mack last year in the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass.
“This year we got a rematch with them so hopefully we’ll get a victory,” Robinson said.
