St. John’s signee JaKarr Sampson will go back to Brewster (N.H.) Academy after he was deemed academically ineligible to play college basketball.
“JaKarr Sampson has decided to return to Brewster Academy as a post grad student and to further his education to complete his academic requirements to attend college,” his AAU coach, Don Anderson, said by text. “He wishes to thank everyone who played a part in this decision.”
Anderson said it was possible Sampson could become eligible in the second semester and join St. John’s in December.
“It’s whenever he becomes eligible,” he said.
Anderson said Sampson remains committed to St. John’s.
“Yes,” he said.
The 6-foot-8 Sampson is an Akron, Ohio native who spent last year at Brewster. He was one of three incoming St. John’s freshmen declared ineligible. Amir Garrett and Norvel Pelle are the other two.
