  • Drummond Suffers Broken Nose, Concussion; Louisville’s Blackshear Done for the Season

UConn freshman star Andre Drummond suffered a broken nose and mild concussion during practice Friday, according to sports information director Kyle Muncy.

Drummond, the Big East Preseason Rookie of the Year, will be fitted for a mask Monday and will wear it 6-8 weeks.

He was checked into the UConn infirmary Friday and released Saturday, according to Muncy.

“This sucks. Mild concussion and I broke my nose. #worstdayever.” the 6-foot-11 Drummond tweeted.

The Hartford Courant reported that Drummond was accidentally hit by freshman Brendan Allen, who just made the team as a walk-on.

Drummond’s status for Wednesday’s exhibition against AIC remains uncertain.

“We will not rush to have Andre for Wednesday or any target date,” UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. “We want him ready for the whole year, that’s what’s important.

“To rush him back for an exhibition makes no sense if it sets him back. We need him long term more than just Wednesday.”

    BLACKSHEAR DONE FOR THE SEASON

Louisville freshman Wayne Blackshear will miss the upcoming season after suffering a shoulder injury Friday in practice, the school announced.

An MRI shows Blackshear has a torn labrum that will require surgery. His recovery time is expected to be at least four months.

Blackshear, a McDonald’s All-American, was recovering from a left shoulder injury that also required surgery. He practiced with the Cardinals for the first time Monday.

It was the first time Blackshear had picked up a basketball in nearly six months, coach Rick Pitino said. The 6-foot-5 wing received clearance from the NCAA to play as a freshman a week ago.

Blackshear averaged 32.6 points and 14.6 rebounds his senior year at Chicago’s Morgan Park High School.
