NEWARK — With his 11 assists in No. 24 Seton Hall’s 94-73 rout of DePaul Tuesday night, Jordan Theodore passed three former Pirates and moved into sixth place on the school’s all-time list.
Theodore, who tied his career-high with 26 points in the win, now has 444 career assists.
Among the names he passed were Danny Hurley (437) and Richie Regan (443).
“I know Danny very well,” Theodore said of the current Wagner College coach. “I know Richie Regan’s family. I didn’t know I was up in the standings like that. To be honest I don’t look at the records. I know the names very well though. Our facility is named after (Regan). When you walk in Walsh you see him up there and you read about him. He’s a big-time guy, rest in peace.”
With 129 assists this year, Theodore is eight shy of the 137 he posted last season. The single-season record of 197 was set by Golden Sunkett in 1962-63.
Next up on the all-time list is John Morton (452), now an assistant at Fordham. Theodore could reach or surpass Morton when the Pirates (15-2) visit South Florida Friday.
Associate head coach Shaheen Holloway ranks first all-time with 681 assists.
“I want to be No. 1 one,” Theodore said. “I know who number one is, my coach. I’ve got to give out a lot more assists to catch him. I think I can catch him if I start giving out 15, 16 a game.”
The Pirates might need a deep postseason run for Theodore to challenge Holloway.
Either way, head coach Kevin Willard believes Theodore is playing at an elite level.
“He’s turning himself into one of the premier players—not only point guards, but players—in the country,” Willard said.
