St. John’s freshman forward Moe Harkless on Monday was named Big East Rookie of the Week for the first time this season.
The 6-foot-8 Harkless averaged 26.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in two games against West Virginia and Duke, including a 30-point, 13-rebound outing in a loss to the Blue Devils.
”Harkless had a terrific stat-line against us,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.
Harkless leads all Big East freshmen in scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg) and appears to be the favorite for Big East Rookie of the Year honors at this point.
“I’m pretty surprised about how well I’ve been playing so far,” Harkless, a Queens native, said after putting up 23 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks as St. John’s routed West Virginia, 78-62, Wednesday at MSG. “It’s a tough league and I’m just going out there and playing hard.”
Marquette guard Darius Johnson-Odom was named Player of the Week after averaging 21.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.0 spg in a 2-0 week.
