The 6-foot-9, 237-pound Rhoomes is currently living in Middletown, N.Y., and taking online courses. He was one of six NIA prep student-athletes declared academically ineligible last summer and never wound up at TCU.
“Right now my main priority is to get these classes knocked out,” Rhoomes, who turns 20 in August, told SNY.tv Friday by phone.
“I really want to stay close to home.”
Cardozo coach Ron Naclerio, Rhoomes’ former high school coach, said St. John’s, Seton Hall, Temple, Virginia Tech, Hofstra, Fordham and Manhattan have all expressed interest.
“I spoke to [St. John’s coach Steve] Lavin about two weeks ago,” Naclerio said. “I spoke to the Temple people and I spoke to Shaheen [Holloway] of Seton Hall.
“Now we have to see what schools he’s going to visit officially and unofficially and pick a college.”
Rhoomes’ Letter of Intent to TCU expires a year after he signed it, and he’s also no longer bound to the school because he was not academically qualified.
“Anything is an option right now,” Rhoomes said, adding that he expects to be academically eligible.
“I should be cleared,” he said.
Naclerio said he expected Rhoomes to turn up at his workouts next Saturday and at that point the coach would have a better understanding of what kind of shape he’s in.
“Supposedly he’s been working out,” Naclerio said. “We’ll see then.”
