Michael Haynes, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Indian Hills (IA) Community College, has committed to Iona.
A former high school star in Chicago, Haynes averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds last season.
He also held offers from Arkansas State, San Jose State and South Dakota State.
“Mike is a strong, powerful athlete around the rim,” Indian Hills coach Barret Peery told SNY.tv. “He runs the floor very well and can defend multiple positions. He can face up and shoot as well. He has tremendous passion and energy and will bring effort every day.
Haynes signed with Texas-El Paso after playing in prep school in Virginia, but didn’t play for UTEP.
Haynes played two seasons at Washington High School in Chicago and led them to back-to-back appearances in the city championship game.
He was rated the No. 11 player in Illinois by ChicagoHoops.com following his junior season.
Haynes joins forwards DaSean Anderson and David Laury (who becomes eligible at midseason) and guards Brandon Parga, A.J. English, Grant Ellis and DaShawn Gomez in Iona’s 2012 class. Iona also just landed Iowa State transfer Tavon Sledge, who must sit a year per transfer rules
