Oak Hill swingman Brian Oliver has made his choice.
Oliver, a 6-6 junior from Delaware who is originally from Glassboro, N.J., chose Georgia Tech over Virginia Tech, Miami, Pitt and West Virginia. Numerous other schools had offered.
“I love that it’s a good school in the ACC, and I feel really comfortable with he coaches,” Oliver said. “I’ve talked to coach (Paul) Hewitt and Coach (John) O’Connor quie a bit in the past several months. Georgia Tech has been following me since I was 15.
“This was not an easy decision. I had so many great coaches recruiting me. Georgia Tech is really close to my uncle and his family. I’m big on family and that gave them the edge.”
Robert Oliver, Brian’s father, said Saturday that his son would take his visits in September, but Brian felt comfortable enough to commit early. He is in New York competeing with the Playaz Basketball Club at the Rumble in the Bronx. His teammates include St. Anthony junior wing Dominic Cheek.
“Georgia Tech is a strong academic school in one of the top conferences,” Oliver said. “I was looking for that, as well as a school that I can have an opportunity to be an impact player for. My dad tells me that at some point the ball stops bouncing and I have to be ready forĀ it, and I know he’s right: no one plays forever. I haven’t figured anything specific out yet as far as a major. I’m thinking International Business Management possibly.”
Oliver has already made the all-tournament teams at the Providence Jam Fest, GBOA Tournament and the Bob Gibbons TOC. He also won the 3-point shooting contest at the GBOA. He heads to the NBA Top 100 Camp on Tuesday (along with numerous players from New York/New Jersey/Connecticut. The PLayaz have three tournaments in July: Reebok Summer Classic, Joe Brown Memorial Tournament and the adidas 64 in Las Vegas.
