Rutgers junior wide receiver Kenny Britt was named a Third Team All-American by the Associated Press Wednesday.
Britt follows former RU All-American Ray Rice on the AP All-America team after Rice collected second team honors in 2006 and 2007.Britt was also named a Third Team All-America selection by Phil Steele and was an Honorable Mention All-America honoree by SportsIllustrated.com Wednesday.Britt was also a First Team All-Big East selection. The nation’s second leading receiver with an average of 113.8 yards receiving per game, he leads the Big Esat in receptions (81) and receiving yards (1,252). Britt is Rutgers’ all-time career leader and ranks second in conference history with 2,924 receiving yards. He is 80 yards shy of the Big East all-time record for career receiving yards.
He owns the single-season school record with 1,252 receiving yards in 2008. Britt is third in Rutgers’ career annals with 172 receptions and tied for second with 16 career touchdown receptions. He has also caught a pass in 30 straight games, the eighth longest streak in the Big East
Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has said he would talk with Britt after the season about the possibility of turning pro.
Rutgers meets N.C. State Dec. 29 in the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.
TWINS COMMIT TO RUTGERS
Twins Jamil and Jamal Merrell of Newark (DE) Hodgson Vo-Tech committed to Rutgers.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Jamil is weakside defensive end ranked No. 16 in the Class of 2009 by Rivals and the 6-4, 195-pound Jamal is an outside linebacker rated No. 30.
“We loved all the coaches and they way they do things,” Jamal Merrell told Bobby Deren of ScarletNation.com. “It’s real different at Rutgers. They do their own thing and that’s what separates them from other colleges. Coach [Joe] Susan told us they were like a dragon that was in a cage. And now that dragon’s coming out and breathing fire. Me and my brother want to go help out the team and be a part of it.”
Twins Jason and Devin McCourty hosted the Merrells’ and influenced their choice
“Our host was the McCourty twins,” said Merrell. “We really liked them both as players and also the way they conducted themselves. They conducted themselves really well. That’s how me and my brother want to be.”
