  • SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Less than 12 hours after being spurned for the McDonald’s All-American Game, Alabama signee John Petty took it out on Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley and St. Anthony’s.

The 6-foot-6 Petty dropped a triple-double of 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists en route to MVP honors as Jemison (AL) handed St. Anthony’s its second straight loss, 58-52, at the Hoophall Classic. The Friars had won 41 straight games dating to March 2015 before falling to archrival St. Patrick’s on Saturday at the Dan Finn Classic.

“Yeah, I was kind of surprised, I feel like I deserved to be on there [the McDonald’s Game],” Petty told me. “But my philosophy is God always closes one door and then opens another one so I just prayed about it and stay humble.”

Asked if he will use it as motivation going forward this season, Petty said, “Most definitely. I always come out with a chip on my shoulder and [now I will] get ready for college, I guess.”

Collin Sexton, the 6-foot-2, 182-pound guard from Pebblebrook (GA) High School, committed to Alabama Thursday on ESPNU.

He also considered Kansas, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.

“Next year I will be going to Alabama,” he said. “I felt like Coach Avery Johnson, he was just a great coach. Everybody down there had very great energy, communication was great and they were on me for a long, long time.”

Sexton joins forward Alex Reese, wing Herb Jones and forward Galin Smith in coach Avery Johnson’s 2017 class. Alabama also landed a commitment from 5-star wing John Petty on Thursday

Alabama enjoyed a huge recruiting day on Thursday.

Herb Jones, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard from Hale County (AL), committed to the Crimson Tide over Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Alex Reese, a 6-9 power forward from Pelham (AL), announced for Alabama over UAB later Thursday.

“Herb has a fantastic combination of size, skill, production, and potential that makes him an intriguing prospect,” Garrett Tucker, a talent evaluator and writer for HoopSeen, told AL.com. “His versatility allows him to play multiple positions, too. The way the NBA is evolving to a 3-and-D type of game, he’s perfect for that. He can score from all 3 levels and he can guard anywhere on the perimeter.
