Kira Lewis, the 6-foot-3 point guard from Hazel Green (AL) High School, told ZAGSBLOG on Friday that Alabama, Dayton, Baylor, Virginia, Tennessee, LSU, and Western Kentucky are the seven schools working hardest for his recruitment.

Lewis, who trips to Tennessee this weekend for an unofficial visit to see the North Carolina vs. Tennessee game (Dec. 17), broke down each school.

Alabama: “They talk about how they’re changing the program. They’ve got a great recruiting class this year. They’re just trying to do what they did this past year, getting top talent to the school.”

Dayton: “They want me to come in and handle the ball. They want me to come in for 2018, but they’re recruiting me for both classes. It’s a great school.”

For the first time in Big 12 history, three schools have captured all of the major men’s basketball postseason awards. Frank Mason III (Player of the Year), Bill Self (Coach) and Josh Jackson (Freshman) of Kansas have been recognized, with West Virginia’s Jevon Carter (Defensive Player) and Tarik Phillip (Sixth Man) also earning honors. Manu Lecomte of Baylor is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Mason, a leading candidate for national player of the year who is averaging 20.5 points, is the first Kansas player to lead the Big 12 in scoring since 2004-05. He was also first in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.493) while ranking fourth in assists (5.1 apg).

Jackson is the top-scoring freshman in the Big 12 with 16.4 points per game. Along with Mason, he is a candidate for both the Naismith and Wooden Awards after earning a combined nine weekly league awards (two player, seven newcomer) during the 2016-17 campaign.

Trevon Duval, the top point guard in the Class of 2017, will take his fourth official visit to Baylor beginning Sunday and will be in attendance for Monday’s West Virginia-Baylor game on ESPN’s “Big Monday.”

A Delaware native now playing at IMG Academy (FL), Duval has taken officials to Kansas, Duke and Arizona, where he was in attendance for UCLA’s 77-72 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. He also plans to visit Seton Hall.

The Top 25 underwent a major overhaul last week after 14 ranked teams lost, including seven of the top 10.

More changes are on the way after a wild Saturday of upsets and takedowns.

Six of the top 10 teams lost, including Nos. 2 and 3 at home to unranked teams — a first in the 69-year history of the AP poll, according to ESPN Stats.

The day opened with Iowa State knocking off No. 2 Kansas 92-89 at Allen Fieldhouse. The Cyclones’ victory, made possible by a school-record 18 3-pointers, bolstered their NCAA Tournament hopes and ended the Jayhawks’ home winning streak at 51 games.

“They played with house money today,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I’m sure Steve would say the same thing. They came in here with a free mind and said, ‘Let’s just let it go.'”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The one place Kansas guard Frank Mason III and his teammates can find a reprieve these days seems to be the basketball court, where the third-ranked Jayhawks can be defined only by their play.

Off the floor, distractions and controversy abound.

News surfaced last week that police were investigating a reported rape at McCarthy Hall, where the basketball team and other students live. No suspects have been identified in connection with the alleged incident the night of Dec. 17, but five members of the team have been identified as witnesses. During the investigation, police discovered drug paraphernalia — two glass smoking devices with residue inside. Sophomore forward Carlton Bragg Jr. was suspended indefinitely last week, and on Monday he was formally charged with misdemeanor possession and ordered to appear in court March 3.
