  • The Big East Coach of the Year race is shaping up to be a dandy. There are at least five legitimate candidates among the league’s 10 head coaches.

Here’s a quick breakdown of those in consideration.

The Friars were picked ninth in the 10-team league after losing Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil off of last year’s team. But they are now one of the hottest teams in the league heading into Saturday’s season-finale against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. The Friars (19-11, 9-8) have won five straight, including beating No. 22 Butler at home and No. 23 Creighton on the road. They also downed Xavier and Marquette. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi currently has them among his “Last Four In,” along with Seton Hall and Marquette.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Butler athletic director Barry Collier has dealt with plenty of turbulence during his basketball career.

It was nothing like Thursday night’s flight home from New York.

Collier said the lights on the plane went out about 40 minutes into the flight, oxygen masks deployed, tears flowed and text messages started being sent as the Bulldogs descended from 35,000 feet to 10,000 feet before an unscheduled landing in Pittsburgh.

In Collier’s opinion, it was eventful and unusual but not terrifying.

“It felt a lot like a normal descent for a landing, it wasn’t dramatically different — other than the cabin was dark,” Collier told The Associated Press on Friday as the Bulldogs took a bus home. “After about five or 10 minutes, the lights came back on.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) — With six new players donning a Butler uniform this season, coach Chris Holtmann isn’t sure what to expect from his Bulldogs.

Some have labeled this season as a rebuilding year. Holtmann shrugs it off with a wait-and-see attitude.

He may not have to wait any longer, as his Bulldogs showed plenty of resolve Friday night in a 69-65 victory over No. 8 Arizona in the championship game of the Continental Las Vegas Invitational.

Kelan Martin had 16 points, while Andrew Chrabascz had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Butler (6-0), while Avery Woodson contributed 13 points, Kamar Baldwin had 11 and Tyler Wideman had eight rebounds.

Chrabascz was named MVP of the tournament.
