  • NEW YORK — Bobby Hurley and Duke share a double-bill in Manhattan on Tuesday night.

But the former Duke point guard won’t be coaching against his old coach, Mike Krzyzewski, and his alma mater. Neither side would want that game — unless it absolutely had to happen.

“We’ve never had that conversation, I wouldn’t look to schedule that game [with Duke],” Hurley, who led Duke to back-to-back NCAA championships in the early 1990s, told me Monday after his Arizona State team (5-3) practiced at the New York Athletic Club ahead of Tuesday’s matchup with No. 18 Purdue (6-2) in the Jimmy V Classic. No. 5 Duke (8-1) meets No. 21 Florida (7-1) in the second game of the doubleheader.

“If we’re fortunate enough to be in the [NCAA] Tournament,” Hurley added, “we’ll play anyone that we get a chance to play.”

If you’re a college hoops fan, the New York metropolitan area is the place to be this week.

Syracuse, UConn, Duke, Florida, Villanova and Kentucky are among the teams that will play games this week at Madison Square Garden Garden, Prudential Center and Barclays Center.

The head coaching roster includes Naismith Hall of Famers Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and John Calipari of Kentucky, along with names like UConn’s Kevin Ollie, Arizona State’s Bobby Hurley, Notre Dame’s Mike Brey and Villanova’s Jay Wright.

    Here’s the schedule of events:

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Luke Kennard scored a career-best 35 points and freshman Jayson Tatum finished with 10 points in his long-awaited debut, leading No. 5 Duke past Maine 94-55 on Saturday.

Amile Jefferson added a career-high 20 points for the Blue Devils (8-1), who played without a true point guard.

Preseason All-America Grayson Allen and freshman Frank Jackson — their starting backcourt for the past four games — were held out. Allen has been dealing with a lingering toe injury, while Jackson has not had any publicly disclosed injuries.

Even without those two, the Blue Devils had plenty of offensive punch, shooting 60 percent in routing the struggling Black Bears (2-6). Ilker Er scored all 20 of his points in the first half for Maine.

The story of this one was who finally played for Duke — Tatum and big man Marques Bolden — as well as who didn’t.

On the same day that Duke officially announced the signing of its three-man recruiting Class of 2017, Gary Trent Jr. went off for 36 points in a win at the Marshall County Hoop Fest in Paducah, Kentucky.

Playing against Kentucky-bound guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Hamilton Heights (TN), Trent Jr. had 36 on 14-of-28 shooting in a 72-62 win for Prolific Prep. He was named the game’s MVP.

“He works at his game,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “He wants to be an outstanding player. He wants to do the process that gets there.”

Duke officially announced the signing of its three-man class of Gary Trent Jr., Wendell Carter Jr. and Alex O’Connell.

The Class of 2017 group is ranked No. 4 by Scout.com behind Kentucky, UCLA and Arizona.

The 6-foot-5 Trent Jr. is a five-star recruit ranked as the No. 8 overall prospect and the No. 1 shooting guard in the class of 2017 by ESPN.

“He works at his game,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “He wants to be an outstanding player. He wants to do the process.”
