SAN ANTONIO — Villanova is cutting down the nets for the second time in three years — and they have “The Michael Jordan of Delaware” to thank for it.

Donte DiVincenzo, the Wilmington, Del., native given that moniker by head coach Jay Wright, came up huge on the biggest stage in college basketball.

DiVincenzo scored a game- and career-high 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks as Villanova dominated Michigan, 79-62, before 67,831 at the Alamodome to win their second NCAA title in three years. Wright became just the third active Division 1 head coach with two or more rings.

“There have been so many ups and downs and just being out there and just seeing the confetti fall, and just being able to hug each other and know that we played Villanova basketball tonight,” said DiVincenzo, who was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.”

With the launch of Ice Cube’s BIG3 league and the sport’s admission into the 2020 Olympics, 3-on-3 basketball is all the rage now. In 2018 it will become part of the Final Four.

The company Intersport on Tuesday announced the creation of the 3-on-3 College Hoops Invitational, a first-ever event that will pit all-star teams from college basketball’s top conferences against each other in a three day tournament from March 30 through April 1, 2018 in San Antonio, site of the Final Four.

Per the company’s release, “Teams will be competing for a $100,000 prize pool. All participating players must be seniors that have exhausted their collegiate eligibility. ”

It remains unclear how teams will be selected, but there’s already one vote for Seton Hall’s senior trio of Khadeen Carrington, Angel Delgado and Desi Rodriguez, part of a Pirates team that hopes to make a March run.

“The game of 3-on-3 basketball continues to gain momentum thanks to its recent addition to the Olympics in 2020 and further development at the professional and grassroots levels,” said Intersport’s Vice President of Sports Properties Drew Russell. “Based on our storied and successful history of creating and producing live college events for more than 30 years, Intersport is perfectly positioned to bring 3-on-3 basketball to the college game. We’ve been in the planning stages for months and are excited to bring this new and exciting opportunity to market for the very first time.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The final stage of this college basketball season is bringing in a slew of firsts for most of those involved.

This edition of the Final Four features just one program with championship head coaching experience. That distinction belongs to blue-blood North Carolina and their lead man Roy Williams. Through his time at Chapel Hill, and previously at Kansas, Williams has made it to nine different Final Fours, winning championships in 2005 and 2009.

After that, though, Mark Few, Frank Martin, and Dana Altman combine for a whopping zero coaching appearances during college basketball’s final two contests. In fact, the programs they represent — Gonzaga, South Carolina, and Oregon, respectively — have just one Final Four appearance between them, Oregon’s 1939 championship during the inaugural NCAA event. In comparison, this latest trip marks the 20th time North Carolina has been one of the final four teams remaining.
