For the second consecutive year, the Duke Blue Devils will open the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the AP Preseason Top-25 poll, with Michigan State, Arizona, Kansas, and Kentucky rounding out the rest of the top-five. Duke had 33 of 65 first-place votes.

“It is an honor to be picked No. 1 in your sport,” Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski told the Associated Press Wednesday. “At this time of the year, it truly is a prediction, so you haven’t earned No. 1 yet. More than likely, past teams that have played at Duke have put this team in a position where people might say, ‘How is that team going to do?’ or ‘They have a lot of talent’ and all of the sudden, you’re No. 1. Certainly, it’s an honor and we’ll look forward to trying to achieve and earn that ranking at some time during the season, hopefully at the end.”

Duke’s players voted junior guard Grayson Allen team captain for the upcoming season.

The news was first reported by The Athletic.

Allen was one of three captains last season, along with Amile Jefferson and Matt Jones, but had the title stripped after he tripped Elon’s Steven Santa Ana during the first half of a Dec. 21 game at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski stripped Allen of his captaincy and suspended him indefinitely in the wake of that incident. The suspension ending up lasting one game, as he returned against Georgia Tech on Jan. 4.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — On the surface, this season would seem like a big step backward for Duke’s Grayson Allen.

Last year the embattled star guard averaged more points, he shot the ball at a higher percentage, he played more minutes. Oh, and he was a starter.

This year Allen has taken a seat on the bench due to the emergence of sophomore Luke Kennard, who took Allen’s place as the team’s most dynamic scorer. The last time he showed up in the starting lineup was in an away game against Syracuse on Feb. 22. Duke lost that contest on a buzzer-beater by John Gillon.

Since then, Allen slid into a reserve role and Duke responded more positively than you would guess. The Blue Devils are 6-1 since the move and in the midst of a five-game winning streak that includes an ACC Tournament title and a Round of 64 blowout victory over Troy.

NEW YORK — The box score from Duke’s nine-point loss at Louisville on January 14th most closely resembles an artifact.

Grayson Allen dropped 23 points and 9 boards. Frank Jackson logged ten minutes. Amile Jefferson was absent, nursing a bruised right foot. Ditto for head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his surgically repaired back.

Flash forward to Wednesday, when Duke secured a 79-72 win over Clemson in the second round of the ACC Tournament, clinching a rematch with Louisville on Thursday in the form of a quarterfinal date (approximately 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).
