  • Steve Alford says he’s not going anywhere.

“I am absolutely 100 percent not going to Indiana,” he told ESPN’s Jeff Goodman following UCLA’s 86-75 loss to Kentucky in the Sweet 16 in Memphis thanks to a career-high 39 points from Kentucky freshman point guard De’Aaron Fox. “Staying at UCLA. I am happy. Love it here. Have a great class coming in, and brand-new practice facility. Obviously, I love my alma mater.

“Committed to UCLA. I am not going to talk to Indiana. I am staying a Bruin.”

If Alford is truly out of the picture, other potential candidates for Indiana include Dayton’s Archie Miller, Xavier’s Chris Mack, whose team is in the Elite Eight, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Butler’s Chris Holtmann, whose team lost to North Carolina in the Sweet 16.

Alford has been heavily linked to his alma mater Indiana, which has all but said it wants to replace Tom Crean with someone with ties to Indiana and the Bob Knight Era.

INDIANAPOLIS — Kentucky coach John Calipari and Louisville coach Rick Pitino both supported Tom Crean after he was fired by Indiana on Thursday and both said he would land another job down the road.

“In this profession, you’re hired and you’re fired, that’s the two things that happen,” Calipari said on the eve of his No. 2-seeded Wildcats facing No. 15 Northern Kentucky at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “Whether I think it’s right or not, I’m just disappointed for him and his family.

“But let me say this, someone will hire him because he’s Tom Crean, he works, [has] great integrity. So ther will be a job and if he wants to take it he’ll take it. And if not he’ll sit out and do what I did, I became the best amateur golfer in the country for about six months.”

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Coach Tom Crean got right to the point after Indiana’s latest loss.

The defense must be more consistent, the shooting must improve and his players must become better leaders over the next month if the Hoosiers are to have any chance of earning an NCAA Tournament bid.

So after 26 games and the same old problems, there are real questions about what, if anything, can be fixed in time to make a late-season push.

“I’m not shirking responsibility one iota, it falls on me. One thing I’ve learned in nine years, it all falls on me,” Crean told reporters Sunday. “The bottom line is we’ve got to do something to get communication up and when the shots aren’t going is when the communication has got to be even higher. It’s very easy to be locked in and connected to one another when the shots are going, but when they aren’t going is when real leadership’s got to emerge.”

Oregon is making a late run at Class of 2017 wing Jordan Tucker, who is primarily focusing on Indiana and Villanova and is targeting a decision next month.

Oregon assistant Tony Stubblefield and Indiana assistant Chuck Martin were in to see the 6-foot-7 Tucker on Thursday morning at Marietta (GA) Wheeler.

“Oregon is trying to get in the mix, trying to make a late run based on relationships,” Lou Tucker, Jordan’s father, said by phone.
