  • (AP) — Joakim Noah’s disappointing Knicks career is over after just two seasons.

Unable to find a trade, the Knicks waived Noah, a 33-year-old center, on Saturday with two years and $37.8 million remaining on his contract.

Noah had been away from the team since clashing with the former coach Jeff Hornacek last season, when he appeared in only seven games. The Knicks had already decided he would not rejoin the club under their new coach, David Fizdale, but they were hoping they could find a trade to get something back for him without having to cut him.

Noah signed with his hometown team in July 2016 and drew a loud ovation in his first appearance at Madison Square Garden, where he was introduced as being from Hell’s Kitchen, a Manhattan neighborhood not far from the Garden, rather than from the University of Florida, the team he helped win two N.C.A.A. championships.

The Chicago Bulls selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draft. He had great years with the Bulls, highlighted by being voted defensive player of the year and first-team All-N.B.A. in 2014.

Knicks coach David Fizdale has tabbed Kentucky product Kevin Knox to start at small forward when the season opens Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden.

“He’s been up and down,” Fizdale said Friday following the Knicks 113-107 preseason loss to the rival Nets, according to ESPN’s Ian Begley. “I think he’s shown the ability to start in the first two games with the double-doubles. And the last three stunk. But for that position and what we’re trying to grow there, I think he’s what we want to put in that spot.”

The 6-foot-9 Knox shot 1-for-6 with three points and two rebounds against Brooklyn. Through five preseason games, the No. 9 pick in the NBA Draft is averaging 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds.

Knox said he needs the preseason to adjust to the NBA speed and talent.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Kristaps Porzingis doesn’t have a timetable on his return from ACL recovery, and didn’t rule out sitting out the entire 2018-19 season if necessary.

“I’m hungry and I want to be back on the court as soon as possible,” the 7-foot-3 unicorn said Monday at Knicks’ Media Day in his first public comments since the spring. “It’s been a long process. I’m getting itchy and I want to be back on the court as soon as possible. But it won’t happen until I’m 110 percent and medically cleared.”

He added: “Timetable, there’s no timetable yet. We’re moving forward and progressing every day. Whenever I’m ready, I’m going to be back.”
