  • BOSTON (AP) Kyrie Irving offered a simple message to science teachers Monday.

“I’m sorry,” the Boston Celtics star said.

And with that, Irving made clear that he regrets publicly saying that the Earth is flat.

Speaking Monday at the Forbes Under 30 summit in Boston, the flat-Earth topic that Irving inserted himself into last year was discussed — and the All-Star guard said he didn’t realize the effect that his claim would have once it went public.

“To all the science teachers, everybody coming up to me like, `You know I’ve got to reteach my whole curriculum?’ I’m sorry,” Irving said, as the room attending his session laughed. “I apologize. I apologize.”

LAS VEGAS — Kyrie Irving isn’t in a position where he could play with USA Basketball this week at its minicamp.

He made the trip to Las Vegas anyway.

The way Irving sees it, if USA Basketball calls, you answer. So he was in the gym Thursday for the start of the two-day camp, watching and interacting with guys but not partaking in the on-court action.

And he insisted that when the Boston Celtics start training camp in about two months, he will be fully ready to go.

“Easily. Easily. Easily,” the former Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick’s star said. “It’s just the summertime. This is probably one of the first summers in my last seven years where I’ve actually had time to kind of develop and work on things that I want to improve on.”

Jeff Van Gundy isn’t feeling Kyrie Irving’s latest comments.

During ESPN’s broadcast Friday night of the Cavaliers-Wizards game, Van Gundy took issue with Irving’s comments that appeared to take a shot at Cavs coach Ty Lue.

“Somebody texted me something about him saying he went to Boston because he wanted to play for an intellectual coach,” Van Gundy told Mike Breen on air. “I want to get that quote because if he did say that, that’s disappointing because Ty Lue, I coached him and he’s a very smart man.”

Breen added, “When you coach a team that is led by LeBron James, that the expectations is title or disappointment each year, that’s a tough job.”

Kyrie Irving says he hasn’t spoken with LeBron James since he requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, but called James “one of the greats” in NBA history.

“No, I haven’t spoken to him,” Irving said at the introductory press conference for himself and Gordon Hayward with the Boston Celtics in response to a question from ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

Led by James and Irving, the Cavs reached three straight NBA Finals, winning the title in 2016 and losing to Golden State in 2015 and ’17.

Yet Irving requested a trade following this year’s loss to the Warriors after sources in his camp said his relationship with James had become irreparable. The trade went down on Aug. 22, but wasn’t completed until this week when the Celtics agreed to include a 2020 second-round pick after the Cavs expressed concern over Isaiah Thomas’ health.
