COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Melo Trimble fueled a second-half surge that put No. 22 Maryland in control, and the Terrapins beat Rutgers 67-55 on Tuesday night to remain in first place in the Big Ten.

Trimble scored 17 points and freshman Kevin Huerter had 11 for the Terrapins (18-2, 6-1), who own their best record after 20 games since the 1998-99 season.

Facing a team that has never won a conference game on the road, Maryland led only 38-35 shortly after halftime before Trimble took over. He threw an outlet pass that led to an easy layup, then drilled a 3-pointer. Huerter followed with a 3 to make it 46-35 — too big a deficit for Rutgers to make up.

Maryland entered the game tied with Wisconsin atop the Big Ten standings.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Jamel Artis scored 15 of his 22 points in the decisive first half, and Pittsburgh held off previously unbeaten Maryland 73-59 Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Panthers (6-1) shot 67 percent from the floor before halftime, including 5 for 10 beyond the arc, and used a 25-4 run to turn a 16-15 deficit into a 40-20 lead.

It was 51-26 with 15:45 remaining before Maryland (7-1) closed to 63-55 with three minutes left. But the Terrapins could not complete the comeback.

NEW HAVEN –– Maryland signee Bruno Fernando looked impressive in his first game with IMG Academy at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College.

Displaying a diversified skillset, including several jumpers, a hook shot and a handful of rim-rattling dunks, the 6-foot-10 Fernando went for 20 points and 3 blocks as IMG Academy (FL) beat St. Thomas More (CT), 75-64.

“I think I’m a really good post player but since I got to IMG I’ve been playing more on the perimeter,” he said after the win. “I’ve been definitely working on my jumpers a lot. Since I got to IMG, my coach has been doing a great job letting me play outside the paint a little bit. I’ve been playing more outside than inside. I think I can get a lot more better at that. I just have to keep working on it.”

The Big Ten held its annual Media Day in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. And in March, the conference will hold its postseason tournament at the Verizon Center.

A year from now, the conference will move its festivities to New York, with the Big Ten Tournament set for Madison Square Garden in 2018 — a week ahead of the Big East Tournament there.

And the move Eastward gets a big thumbs up from Maryland coach Mark Turgeon and Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell.

“We’re excited about having Media Day here in D.C. and excited about having the tournament,” Turgeon said. “Jim Delaney kept his word. He told me when we were joining the league that he would get us into D.C. So we’re grateful for that, and I know our fans are excited about that too.”

A year from now, the Big Ten tourney will be in Rutgers’ back yard in New York.
