  • NEW YORK — Maryland is now the No. 1 option for Moses Brown, the 7-foot-2 senior big man from Archbishop Molloy High School and the New Heights AAU program, his father told ZAGSBLOG.

“Right now, yes,” Malcolm Brown said at the NYC Hoops for Hurricane Relief Game at the Gauchos Gym where Moses was competing on Saturday night.

Brown, ranked No. 17 in the 2018 ESPN 100, took his second official visit, to Maryland, last weekend. He took his first official to Louisville earlier this month, and was considering visiting Arizona. But with both schools now squarely at the center of the U.S. Department of Justice investigation into bribery in college basketball, their status with Brown remains unclear.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” Malcolm said.

Louisville “effectively fired” Rick Pitino on Wednesday, and replaced him with interim coach David Padgett. Arizona, meantime, has indefinitely suspended assistant Book Richardson, who was one of four high-profile Division 1 assistants arrested Tuesday by the FBI.

Meantime, Brown enjoyed his Maryland visit.

“It was nice, man, it was the best,” Malcolm said. “They would basically let him use his tools as far as putting it on the floor and if he keeps working on it they feel that they can get a lot out of him, more than just the average big man posting up.

“They was mostly impressed with the simple fact that he stayed with his AAU team when he had a chance to play with numerous teams that was a lot better. But he stayed with New Heights even though everybody left and there was issues and he had to play with the guys that was playing up. And the fact that he stayed with them, it showed a lot of character and they were impressed with that.”

As of now, Brown is in a holding pattern with Maryland leading.

“Yes, feeling Maryland,” Malcolm said. “We gonna see what else happens.”

The early signing period comes in November, but it remains unclear if Brown will sign then or during the spring.

“I’m gonna hold out because there’s so much going on right now,” Malcolm said. “I just gotta let everything air out.”

Maryland also has a huge recruiting weekend going on currently as they host guards Eric Ayala and Devon Dotson and wing Keldon Johnson.

Moses Brown, the 7-foot-2 senior big man from Archbishop Molloy High School and the New Heights AAU program, enjoyed his weekend official visit to Louisville and will next trip to Maryland

Brown, ranked No. 17 in the 2018 ESPN 100, took his first official to Louisville with his father, Malcolm.

“It was great,” his father said Tuesday by phone. “Rick Pitino, I’ve always been a big fan of his, from my father to me to my family, from the New York Knicks to the Boston Celtics. He was really, really supportive and I really think Moses would get a lot out of being around him, not just in basketball but growing as a man.

“We had a good time, Rick Pitino showed us a lot of love.”

Malcolm said the staff also emphasized that Moses would not be limited to just playing under the basket.

“They would not limit his skills,” he said. “Due to the fact that he’s a big man, he would do more than just rebound and block shots because they see he has more tools to use and they would let him live up to everything that he’s capable of doing.”

The Browns toured the Louisville facilities during the visit.

“Yes, we took a tour of the school, it was really, really nice,” Malcolm said. “Moses was impressed, I was impressed. He was impressed with the player development plan that [Pitino] had for Moses and he thinks that he would be really successful in their program.”

Moses Brown, the 7-foot-1 junior big man from Archbishop Molloy and the New Heights AAU program, is considering cutting his list later this summer.

Brown is ranked No. 6 in the 2018 ESPN 60 and is being recruited by a Who’s Who of Division 1 programs.

“When the live periods are over, I will think about cutting my school list down before the high school season starts,” he told Rivals.com at the Pangos All-American Camp.

John Calipari has done well in recent years recruiting forwards and big men from the New York/New Jersey area.

Kentucky has landed New Jersey products Dakari Johnson, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Karl-Anthony Towns and Nick Richards in the last few years, as well as guard Isaiah Briscoe.

So it made sense that Calipari was back in the area on Good Friday meeting with Moses Brown, the 7-foot-1 junior big man from Archbishop Molloy, and Naz Reid, the 6-10 post from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic, the same school that produced Briscoe.

Brown is ranked No. 6 in the 2018 ESPN 60, while Reid is No. 11. Both high school staffs said Kentucky will continue to evaluate the players this spring and summer before making an offer.

NEW YORK — Moses Brown’s thunderous dunk late in the game Friday night brought the standing-room only crowd at Archbishop Molloy High School to its feet amid a chorus of oohs and aahs.

But it was Khalid Moore’s splendid drive and pass that set up the flush.

The 6-foot-6 junior wing enjoyed the best game of his career with 21 points and 9 rebounds as Molloy beat Christ the King, 78-67, amid a highly-charged atmosphere that saw school officials turning away fans, and at least one college coach, at the doors before the game on the orders of fire marshals.

“Yeah, I think it was one of my breakout games,” Moore, who entered averaging 9.3 points, told me afterward. “I was struggling before, but I just came out with the intensity, I played aggressive and I think I did very good.”
