  • RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Maryland has joined the list of schools to receive a grand jury subpoena seeking records in the ongoing federal corruption investigation into college basketball.

The school released two subpoenas to The Associated Press and other media outlets Friday in response to public records requests. That follows North Carolina State’s release in March of a similar subpoena seeking communication records between school officials and its former coaching staff, and ex-Wolfpack guard Dennis Smith Jr. and his representatives.

A March subpoena to Maryland sought communications or any information regarding possible improper payments to a former Maryland player — the school redacted the name, citing federal privacy laws — or that player’s family. It also sought the personnel file of men’s basketball assistant coach Orlando “Bino” Ranson, as well as documents or communications regarding or involving Christian Dawkins — an agent runner and one of 10 men originally charged in the case last fall.

NEW YORK — Four college basketball assistant coaches charged in a bribery scheme were among seven people who pleaded not guilty during their arraignments this week.

After Chuck Person, 53, of Auburn, pled not guilty on Tuesday, Emanuel “Book” Richardson, 44, of Arizona, Tony Bland, 37, of Southern California and Lamont Evans, 40, of Oklahoma State followed suit on Wednesday.

Rashan Mitchell also pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, while Merl Code and Christian Dawkins did so Wednesday.

Richardson, Bland, Evans, Code and Dawkins have a status conference Nov. 30, while Mitchell and Person have one Dec. 4.

“Today is the first step of the legal process,” Craig Mordock, an attorney for Richardson, told ZAGSBLOG. “Book pled not guilty and remains not guilty. He looks forward to clearing his name.”

(AP) — Auburn men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl says he can’t comment on a report that states he hasn’t been cooperating with the school’s internal investigation into the program.

ESPN reported Wednesday that university officials have told Pearl he could lose his job if he doesn’t cooperate.

Auburn hired Birmingham law firm Lightfoot, Franklin and White to review the program after former associate head coach Chuck Person’s September arrest in a national federal investigation of corruption in college basketball. Auburn said Wednesday it has fired Person, who was indicted on Tuesday.

University spokesman Brian Keeter said the school can’t comment because of an ongoing investigation. Pearl told reporters essentially the same thing after practice Wednesday, adding that Auburn is working to get the players eligible.

Auburn is holding out sophomores Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy in the wake of the federal complaint against Person.
