    WASHINGTON D.C. — Rutgers Basketball has not been good for a very long time, but all indications are that’s eventually going to change.

    Under first-year head coach Steve Pikiell, the Scarlet Knights (15-17) have more than doubled their win total from last season and now have their first winning streak in conference play after beating Ohio State, 66-57, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at the Verizon Center.

    “We learned how to compete this year,” Pikiell said. “We couldn’t close out some games. But it’s a process when you’re building a program. It takes steps.”

    Rutgers advances to face No. 6 Northwestern (21-10) in Thursday’s nightcap. After helping the program get its first Big Ten Tournament win and finally stringing together consecutive conference victories, guard Corey Sanders believes this could be a turning point.

    “To come out the way we did and do something that nobody thought we could do besides our fans… we had faith the whole time,” he said. “I feel like we could do the same thing tomorrow against Northwestern.”

    Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, UCLA

    Nearly 50 NBA scouts are expected on Saturday for the CBS Sports Classic that features No. 2 UCLA facing Ohio State and No. 6 Kentucky meeting No. 7 North Carolina in Las Vegas, a source told ZAGSBLOG.

    UCLA is led by freshman sensation Lonzo Ball, currently projected as the No. 4 pick in 2017 by DraftExpress.com. Freshman big man T.J. Leaf has also seen his draft stock rise with his play of late for the unbeaten Bruins (11-0).

    “With Lonzo [in the] top 5, I know if I’m at that level, I’ve got him higher than that,” Bruins coach Steve Alford said on The 4 Quarters Podcast. “I just think he’s special. You don’t get point guards that are that size with that length, with that basketball IQ and somebody that can change the game in so many ways. Lonzo can change it through passing, he can change it through defense and his ability to get deflections and steals. He can do it through rebounding and then when you forget about him he can score 9, 10 points in a minute. He’s such a versatile point guard and he’s fun to play with and I think that’s what you see our team enjoying right now, is people like playing with him.”

    Kentucky features three projected first-round one-and-dones in No. 5 Malik Monk, No. 10 De’Aaron Fox and No. 15 Bam Adebayo.

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — London Perrantes knew he wasn’t playing well, and if he had any doubt whatsoever, coach Tony Bennett let him know.

    “I got after him,” Bennett said Wednesday night after Perrantes scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and No. 7 Virginia overcame a sloppy performance and rallied past Ohio State 63-61 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. “I did, and he responded.”

    Perrantes, who had three turnovers by halftime, hit three 3-pointers in the second half to spark the Cavaliers’ surge.

    “I knew I wasn’t playing to the best of my ability or even anywhere close,” the senior point guard and four-year starter said. “I’m glad he kind of got into me. That’s the most I got ripped by him since I’ve been here and it sparked us all.”
