NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Freshman Trae Young had 26 points and tied an NCAA Division I record with 22 assists as No. 17 Oklahoma rolled past Northwestern State 105-68 on Tuesday night in the Sooners’ first game since moving into the Top 25.

Brady Manek added 22 points and Kameron McGusty had 15 for Oklahoma (9-1). The Sooners have won seven straight games – including an upset of then-No. 3 Wichita State on Saturday – and have scored 90 or more points seven times this season.

Young’s 22 assists tied the major college record set by Tony Fairley of Charleston Southern vs. Armstrong in 1987 and matched by Southern’s Avery Johnson against Texas Southern in 1988 and Syracuse’s Sherman Douglas against Providence in 1989.

Young also broke the former Big 12 record of 18, set by Oklahoma’s Michael Johnson vs. North Texas in 1997, and matched by Oklahoma State’s Doug Gottlieb vs. Florida Atlantic in 1998.

For the first 30 minutes on Monday, Kansas looked anything but the nation’s top-ranked team, trailing a 19-loss Oklahoma squad by 12 points with 75 percent of the game completed.

The Jayhawks may have been lacking motivation — after all, Bill Self and his guys already had locked up yet another outright Big 12 title — and also could have been distracted by the Senior Night festivities. Still, there was no excuse for letting Oklahoma do what it was doing. To that point, the Sooners were the much tougher team, dictating the paint and crashing the offensive glass.

As always, Kansas turned it up when it mattered most, winning 73-63 by ending the game on a 31-9 run.

Frank Mason had 23 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals, while Devonte Graham added 16 points, catching fire late via not one, not two, but three three-pointers over a 1 minute, 57-second duration.
