Snubbed by the NBA Draft Combine, St. John’s guard Shamorie Ponds is trying to prove himself during NBA workouts.

The Haggerty Award winner as the best player in the New York-Metropolitan area, Ponds averaged 21.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists as a sophomore but did not receive a Combine invite.

“For sure, I was most definitely upset [about the Combine],” Ponds said Saturday by phone. “I feel I deserved it.”

The 6-foot-1 Brooklyn native worked out for the Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers this weekend, and came away feeling good about his performances.

“I feel I did great, I got some great feedback,” Ponds said after landing back home in New York following the Cavs workout on Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — For the first time in 33 years, the St. John’s men’s basketball team has taken down the nation’s top-ranked team.

Behind 26 points from Shamorie Ponds, the Red Storm held off Villanova at The Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night, topping the No. 1 Wildcats, 79-75.

The win marked the first over a No. 1 team for St. John’s since Jan. 26, 1985, when Chris Mullin scored 20 points to lead the Johnnies past Georgetown, 66-65, in Landover, Md.

After knocking off then-No. 4 Duke on Saturday afternoon at Madison Square Garden, the Red Storm (12-13, 1-11) has defeated top five teams in back-to-back games for the first time in program history.

“I never walk into a game thinking that we have no chance,” said Mullin. “These are huge wins, but more importantly for the players, I think it’s a testament to their perseverance, unselfishness with each other, their confidence, and I’m just happy for them.”

PHILADELPHIA — Between trying out for the U.S. U19 team and playing at the Under Armour All-America Camp, Shamorie Ponds has already had an eventful summer.

The rising sophomore guard from St. John’s played five-on-five this week in front of some 35 NBA scouts, and played well through the first two days of workouts.

“Yeah, it’s pretty exciting,” Ponds told me Thursday afternoon at Philadelphia University. “Just to showcase your talent in front of the next level I’m trying to be at, it’s a little nerve wracking but I’m trying. It’s going to be a job soon.”
