  • It turns out Jim Boeheim isn’t going anywhere after all.

Syracuse announced Sunday that the 72-year-old Boeheim and Syracuse have agreed on a new contract that will lengthen his head-coaching tenure beyond the 2017-18 season. The school did not announce how long the extension will go for.

The school also announced the promotion of Adrian Autry to associate head coach.

The extension of the Boeheim’s contract came about as head-coach-in-waiting Mike Hopkins was hired to lead the program at Washington.

Syracuse said it “moved promptly to maintain stability in its program by negotiating the new deal with Boeheim, who had planned to step down following the conclusion of the next season.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Mike Hopkins won’t be waiting on Jim Boeheim any longer.

The man named the “head-coach designate” at Syracuse has been hired away by Washington to replace the fired Lorenzo Romar. The school made it official after ESPN’s Jeff Goodman and others reported it. ESPN reported the deal is for six years.

“The University of Washington is such a unique place, with a world-class University, an exciting basketball history and unbelievable fan support,” Hopkins said. “Together, I believe we can build something very special in Seattle, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I can’t express enough thanks to Coach Boeheim for so many years of mentorship and guidance,” added Hopkins, who had been linked to openings at Charlotte and Oregon State in recent years. “The timing is right for me and my family to make this move.”

A Laguna Hills, Calif., native who was a member of the 1987 California state championship team at Mater Dei High School, Hopkins has West Coast ties. He played at Syracuse for Boeheim from 1989-93 and has been on the coaching staff since 1996.

Hopkins was due to take over for Boeheim, 72, after the 2017-18 season when Boeheim was set to retire. The school named Hopkins as Boeheim’s successor in 2007, a decade ago. It remains unclear what this means for Boeheim and the Syracuse coaching situation going forward.

“I think it means Jim’s staying,” one industry source said.

CIA Bounce point guard Howard Washington is headed to Syracuse.

Head coach Jim Boeheim made a scholarship offer on Saturday to the Class of 2017 Athlete Institute point guard.

“I grew up loving ‘Cuse and I love the ‘Cuse coaching staff,” Washington told ZAGSBLOG. “And I feel that ‘Cuse fits my style of play and feel as though I can make an impact right. I’m a point guard who can score from three and get to the rim and will lead a team and will do whatever it takes to win.”

Washington is a teammate of incoming Syracuse forward Oshae Brissett.

“Howard’s dream school has always been Syracuse,” CIA Bounce head coach Tony McIntyre said. “He grew up in Buffalo watching the Orange and will now join them for 2017. He fits in the mold of what ‘Cuse runs and will be able to fit in easily.”

NEW YORK — Following perhaps his team’s final game of the season, a fired-up Jim Boeheim went off on a number of topics, ranging from the location of the ACC Tournament to his team’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid.

After John Gillon missed a potential game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds, Syracuse lose to Miami, 62-57, in the second round of the ACC Tournament at Barclays Center, leaving the Orange firmly on the bubble.

Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com told ZAGSBLOG that he has Syracuse out of the Big Dance with the loss. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi said on Twitter that Syracuse appeared to be out going into Selection Sunday a year ago, but ended up getting a bid and making the Final Four.

“I know our profile is better this year than it was last year in terms of top wins,” Boeheim said. “And I think the [NCAA Selection] Committee, from what I’ve gathered over my years, is looking for a team or teams that could win games in the Tournament. I think we can.

“I think to look today and say we lost to Miami. Well, Miami was Top 25 in the country last year….One game, that shouldn’t mean anything.”
