  • UConn has received a signed National Letter of Intent from Isaiah Whaley, who will join the men’s basketball program for the 2017-18 season, head coach Kevin Ollie announced on Thursday.

Whaley, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound forward from Gastonia, N.C., is coming from a prep school year at Mt. Zion Prep in Baltimore. He joins an incoming UConn class that includes five newcomers.

“Isaiah is a long, active player who will bring us great energy,” Ollie said. “He gives us some more depth on the front line and I look forward to him coming in and fighting for playing time during his freshman year.”

Whaley averaged just over 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game for Mt. Zion, playing his best games against some of the finest prep school competition in the country and helping the team to a 27-10 record.

The offseason shakeup at UConn continues.

The Huskies have added Raphael Chillious to the staff to replace Glen Miller, while freshman forward Vance Jackson follows sophomore Steven Enoch out the door.

Chillious, the former head coach at South Kent (CT), is an experienced coach and recruiter who knows Connecticut well. Most recently, he was an assistant under Lorenzo Romar at Washington for seven of the last eight years, where he was the lead recruiter for Markelle Fultz, who’s in the mix for the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

“We are very fortunate to be able to add Raphael Chillious to our coaching staff,” UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. “He is a high-level recruiter, but that is far from the only thing he brings to us. He has been involved in many aspects of the college game and has so much experience – he’s been a coach for a long time, he’s worked with Nike … I love his energy, his developmental skills and his knowledge of the game, offensively and defensively. Wherever he’s been, he’s created a culture that is a winning culture.”

The Big East Conference and UConn both said there is “no truth” to the reports that discussions have taken place between the two sides.

“There haven’t been any discussions,” Big East spokesman John Paquette told ZAGSBLOG on Wednesday morning.

“There is no truth to the rumors and reports that UConn has had discussions with the Big East Conference for possible membership,” UConn AD David Benedict said. “UConn is having great success as a member of the American Athletic Conference and will continue to do so in the future. This past Monday night was a prime example of that, as our women’s basketball team won its 100th consecutive game before a sold-out Gampel Pavilion and a national television audience. The game was the highest rated college basketball game on ESPN2 this season – men’s or women’s. UConn has won multiple national championships as a member of the American Athletic Conference and has enjoyed postseason success in many sports as a member of the league. We are committed to the long-term success of the American Athletic Conference and believe the conference is committed to being competitive at the highest level.”
