  • Commissioner Mike Aresco announced today the addition of Wichita State to the American Athletic Conference in men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sports beginning on July 1, 2017. The American’s Board of Directors unanimously voted to accept Wichita State as its newest member.

“We are pleased and proud to welcome Wichita State to The American,” Aresco said. “This is a University with a strong athletic and academic heritage which shares our Conference’s commitment to excellence, and we look forward to having them as a member. The University has an exceptionally strong tradition of success in men’s basketball and baseball. The addition of Wichita State in basketball and Olympic sports extends our Conference’s national footprint, enhances our national profile, and strengthens our position as a leader in intercollegiate athletics.

“This is an event of great importance in defining the future of Wichita State,” John Bardo, President of Wichita State University said. “Two years ago, we set out on a fact-finding process to determine the best way athletics could help position the University for enrollment growth and enhance WSU’s reputation as an academic and research institution. It became clear to us that The American offered the best combination of universities who share our academic and cultural values and research focus.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Neither Landry Shamet nor any of his Wichita States teammates were ever seriously recruited by Kentucky.

“They never talked to me,” Shamet, a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman guard from Kansas Citym said here ahead of the South Regional second-round game between No. 10 Wichita State and No. 2 Kentucky on Sunday.

Shamet ultimately chose the Shockers over Colorado. He did so in part because of Wichita State’s veteran core that included Cleanthony Early, Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, a group that reached the 2013 Final Four under coach Gregg Marshall before losing to Louisville.

“That was a big reason I came here,” Shamet said. “I wanted to play with Ron and Fred, knowing they’re two NBA guards. When you can say that about your program, it’s definitely going to be more attractive to people.”

Despite losing the top three scorers from 2016’s NCAA Tournament at-large qualifier, this year’s Wichita State Shockers have developed into a formidable squad.

They’re ranked No. 21 in the AP Poll, No. 22 in the Coaches’ Poll, 10th in the KenPom efficiency rankings, and now have a 30-4 record after defeating Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship game, 71-51.

It has been a down year for the MVC, with Illinois State being the only solidly top-100 team. The Redbirds and Shockers went a combined 36-0 against the rest of the conference and both won their home regular season meeting against each other.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet both went undrafted in the NBA Draft last June.

Now the two former Wichita State teammates will both be on opening-night NBA rosters — Baker with the Knicks and VanVleet with the Raptors. Each earned the 15th and final roster spot on his respective team. The NBA’s rookie salary is $543,471.

“Oh yeah, we talked to one another,” Baker told me Monday ahead of the Knicks’ season-opener Tuesday night in Cleveland against LeBron James and the Cavaliers. “A lot of critics didn’t think we could do this. It goes to show Coach [Gregg] Marshall runs a really good program and a lot of things that he taught us has carried over to this league and how we work and how hard we play.”
