Xavier coach Chris Mack says Trevon Bluiett is “day-to-day” with an ankle injury that caused him to miss Wednesday’s loss at Providence.
“As far as Trevon, he’s really day-to-day,” Mack said Thursday on The 4 Quarters Podcast. “Like most guys with a sprained ankle, the pain’s just gotta subside. He’s gotta get the swelling out. It gets better each day. To the point where he can play on Saturday [at Marquette], I’m really not sure. But we’re gonna keep him with the trainers 24/7 in hopes that we can get him back sooner rather than later.”
The 6-foot-6 Bluiett is averaging 17.9 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Musketeers.
Xavier got the worst news possible on Monday when an MRI revealed that sophomore guard Edmond Sumner suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee in Xavier’s game vs. St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
A date for surgery has yet to be determined.
Sumner is Xavier’s second-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game to go with 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
He is projected as the No. 23 pick in the NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.
NEW YORK — Xavier held off a rally from St. John’s at Madison Square Garden but lost sophomore point guard Edmond Sumner to a left knee injury that will require an MRI on Monday.
Sumner was helped off the floor by his teammates with 6 minutes left in No. 24 Xavier’s 82-77 win over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night.
Trevon Bluiett notched 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Musketeers (15-6, 5-3 Big East), Sumner scored 17 points with seven assists, Quentin Goodin added 16 points and JP Macura had 14 points.
Sumner is Xavier’s second-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game to go with 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
“My first concern is for our point guard Edmond Sumner,” Xavier coach Chris Mack said. “Obviously, it didn’t look good. We’ll find out [Monday] and get an MRI. Keep him in your prayers and hopefully he’s back on the court sooner than later. But I really don’t know.”
