Randle Sustains Foot Injury; Will Visit Texas, Kansas & N.C. State (UPDATED)

By CHIP MILLER & ADAM ZAGORIA

UPDATE: Julius Randle limped off the floor in the first half of Prestonwood Christian’s 58-48 loss to Duncanville on Saturday at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, according to MaxPreps.com.  It was later reported that he will miss three months with a fractured right foot.

Prestonwood is already playing without 6-foot-7 sophomore Mickey Mitchell, who tore his ACL playing quarterback during football season.

On Friday, Randle talked about entering the next phase of his recruitment.

The 6-foot-9 power forward from Prestonwood Christian has set up official visits for Texas, Kansas and N.C. State.

Randle will visit Texas Dec 15-16 , Kansas Dec. 28-30 and N.C. State Jan. 25-27, his mother told SNY.tv.

Coaches from Kansas and Texas both watched Randle Friday at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest.

“I have Texas and Kansas next month,” Randle said Friday at the event where he put up 27 points and 13 rebounds in a 59-52 win over LSU-bound Jarell Martin and Madison (LA) Prep.

“I just talked to my mom about it yesterday.”

Texas hosts Texas State in basketball Dec. 15, while Kansas hosts American Dec. 29.

He has already taken officials to Kentucky and Florida, and an unofficial to Oklahoma.

“They were great visits,” he said. “You know, I have a lot of friends there already, so you know it was kind of good to catch up with those guys but also to catch up with the coaches and spend time with the coaches.

“All in all it was a lot of fun. Those visits, you know I got to hang out with the players and all that stuff. You know, I got an up close look on how the program was ranked.”

During Randle’s visit, N.C. State hosts ACC rival North Carolina on Jan. 26.

“Those guys are really close, just a brotherhood,” he said of N.C. State. “One of my best friends, Rodney Purvis, is there so I am really close to him and I get to see their fan base, the campus and a really close look at how they play. Just putting myself in that position of a player that is already there.”

Oklahoma is the sixth school on his list.

“I’m looking for a coach I can trust, one that can get me ready for the next level,‘’ Randle said. “And somewhere that I think I can win, it is a big thing for me.”

Randle will sign in the spring, along with Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon and Dakari Johnson.

In the meantime, he’s trying to work on his game.

“I’ve been working a lot on spot-ups, patience, just reading defenses, you know,” he said.

“We have a lot more shooters so it’s easier to kick this year. One and two dribble pull-ups, I didn’t make any today but you know i think just me taking them, you know helped free me up for my drives and stuff like that and transitioning, just keep me in my condition.”

This whole "locker room" thing is ridiculous. These are grown men getting paid a lot of money to do a job. If someone where I work is "involved with gang members" I could care less what he/she does after work. I don't have to get along or like everyone I work with. I just have to get my job done. What someone does in their spare time does not affect my performance.

Stop with this already. Oh my lord, the locker room! What a stupid theory made up by the media to make something out of nothing. These guys take their unoforms off, take a shower, and go home. That's the locker room.

This is getting annoying now! This guy is a talent! I don't care about his past. The guy is a talent. He scores touchdowns.

Idzik probably had enough cap room to sign DJax, Allen (Ware probably wasn't coming here), and Revis/Byrd/Verner (pick one). Would you guys be happier now? With very little cap space left.

What a great article by Bassett.  Best in the business IMO.

I have to ask. If djax and his background is a red flag to the point we aren't interested because of it, why did we sign mike Vick? How about why is Goodson still on the roster? Let's go a little deeper, if idzik won't "overpay" for players, what's to say he will resign Wilkerson and the likes of them? What if they want 1 dollar more then idzik wants to spend? The point is idziks moves make little to no sense and the excuses for doing so are no better. Close to 30 mil in cap space, 8-8 roster, yes let's stand pat and then draft 12 players cause that's a guarentee that they stick right? Atleast he didn't overpay for fa's though right? I mean paying revis 16 mil is overpaying and those patriots will suck for yrs now because of it. Every excuse made for idzik we can take with a grain of salt, build through the draft. That is smart and I am supporting that. I just don't understand idzik. It's getting frustrating. Hope idzik nails the draft, otherwise we are in deep doo doo!

It's not his past as much as his present. He's bad news to a delicate lockerroom. Jets locker room will never be confused with the 75 steelers. Some things are tough to over come. Just look at the Dolphins.

@will898

If you remember, before free agency began, people were talking about all the FA's we would sign and how we were gonna improve the team by leaps and Bounds.....

We were getting an elite CB, A really good RG, the top WR and TE, as well as the best safety......

If anyone said, hey let's pump the brakes guys....OH MY, He was shouted down as being negative!

Funny how people are......

@j3tsfan29  Then what is your plan? Why don't you put your plan to paper and do some math and tell me how what ever plan you have, works out.

The idea is not to spend to the cap and have it there at all times. You build through the draft, and if you're close to winning it all and need a piece, then you spend. Then sorta blow it up(like Seattle) after you do win.

If what i see from Idzik is what i think, this will not ever be the SOJ under him.

The system (quick fix) that you all are asking for, fell apart at the door step twice. I think we get a invite to the big dance in 3 years, who could possibly stop us then?

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@j3tsfan29  Very good post, but even a good draft will not make us competitive THIS season, that is what facy is for... to fill holes  and that has not happened, at least not yet.  A good GM can improve the present and still build for the future, but it seems Idzik cant walk and chew gum at the same time.

__fense
__fense

@j3tsfan29  Well, I don't thin DJax's background is a red flag and it shouldn't be to anyone, given out flimsy and conveniently timed the article was, but it's also very different from others you were saying. Vick did some terrible things, but he also did time in jail for them, and it isn't likely that he'll do them aga. He's shown that he's not going to cause trouble for the team. Goodson is the opposite. By all accounts, the only thing Goodson did wrong was smoke some (but not a felonious amount of) weed, and it isn't fair (and wouldn't be fair to DJax, who was never arrested for anything, even if the police were pretty sure he was innocent) to persecute people for crimes that they haven't been proven guilty of. If the Guns were his, or the car was is, or even if he was driving, then there would be something to it, but none of those things were true.

So going 'deeper', If Wilkerson would rather get paid more than he's worth, and he thinks he'll get more than he's worth 2 years after he'll be approached about this, then he's free to make that decision, but that's a risk for Wilkerson, too If he gets hurt and his play suffers for it, it will hurt his deal. Also, if he plays out his deal, he'd be playing for the Jets for very little money for longer, so he'd need to make a substantial amount of money more than Idzik is willing to offer him for that to be worth it. Neither side is going to be willing to walk away over a dollar. There's intrinsic advantages to staying with the team you're currently on (especially when that team is in NYC) that makes it easier to get good value from re-signing guys rather than getting them from FA, where there's other bidders involved.

I wouldn't say that the roster is an 8-8 roster. They are certainly improved already by getting the top FA WR and the top FA QB, along with a upgrade/lateral move for cheaper at RT and guys who didn't really play all last year because they were injured now being healthy. Plus, the offseason isn't over, and we have room to grow.

I don't get why this doesn't make sense to people. It's what Idzik said he was going to do in his introductory press conference, and everyone loved it then.

Brendan

@j3tsfan29  You're assuming it's his background and not contract demands that are the reason Idzik hasn't called.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Brendan @will898  Money can buy anything, but you have to spend it to find out and spend it wisely! You need to spend  money to improve the team to a degree. True, the draft is the way to go, but proper spending in Facy is very important also. They must work together and Idzik seems to not understand that in his role as a rookie GM, hopefully he will get it!

HE SUCKED WITH A SUPPORTING CAST!! Since you know nothing about another team in the NFL, lets use some Jets history here.

2006, we had by far the worst team the jets had in my life time. Pennington still lead the team to the playoffs.

Kevin Barlow and Cedric Houston was the RBS.  Chris Baker was the #1 TE, Coles was the #1 WR. We had 2 rookies on the Oline.

Pennington sure had the PEICES!!

Tunnel vision my azz, I look at the NFL as it is, not as what I THINK IT SHOULD BE.

Joey, like 57, only cares about their own opinions. No single fact will ever change their mind.

Joey, still thinks it was the "pieces" that had Sanchez fail.

and 57 still thinks the Ivory trade was bad, because he would have gave them a 5th rounder.

boomer

@jake100 @boomer  It depends on what you mean by flying start.  Everyone who knows Idzik, guys like Tony Dungy who I think knows a bit about building a winning franchise, said that this is exactly what he would do.  Fill in with a FA or two but the vast majority would come through the draft.

Build a team with your players, mold them and keep them.  That is Idzik's plan and it isn't exactly a secret.

You might not like it but saying that there isn't a plan is just flat wrong.

@a57se @jake100

Nah, we are all non violent on here and lovers of life. We have been through it all together as Jets fans and stick together despite differences of opinion.

boomer
boomer

@jake100  Probably the single biggest reason for the up and down season (when every "expert" said the team would be horrible) was the play at QB.  That has been addressed by picking up the best available QB.

And I don't expect the QB position, be it Geno or Vick, to have any where near the number of turnovers it had last season.  That alone will make this team a hell of a lot more competitive.

We are already better at WR with the addition of Decker and more is coming even if its not Jackson. No reason in the world this team can't be in contention this season.  Not to shabby for a team that was supposed to finish at the bottom of the pile last season.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@DrJonathanReefer @jake100 @j3tsfan29

Not my standard of competitive. We only had one occasion of winning 2 games in a row the entire season!

__fense
__fense

@DrJonathanReefer @Brendan @j3tsfan29  I think there's a competitive advantage he gets from telling Schefter that he didn't do anything. If we're in the running, then teams will start bidding a bunch of guaranteed money , because they know we can beat them with upfront payments. But they don't want to spend guaranteed money either, so if they think that it's just people who are also tight on cap space, they would only bid in upfront money. Then when all the bids are in, we swoop in a throw down $1 more and get him for a decent deal.

I'm not claiming that it's likely, but if that were to happen, it would make logical sense. I'm operating on the assumption that Marty and Lee gave him the thumbs down.

a57se

@DrJonathanReefer

Yeah, I bet Idzik did call and made an offer...after jacksons agents picked themselves up off the floor from laughing so hard, they said no thanks and hung up.
