Rysheed Jordan Still Considering UCLA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Steve Alford-to-UCLA news was coming fast and furious to UCLA’s current players and recruits on Saturday, but Rysheed Jordan is still considering the Bruins after the coaching change.

“Yeah, he’s still considering them,” Philly Vaux Roberts coach Jamie Ross told SNY.tv, before adding, “I didn’t even know that Steve Alford got named.”

Ross said he would “talk to ‘Sheed about it and we’ll let you know. He still is considering them.”

The 6-4 Jordan is also mulling St. John’s and Temple and will announce April 15.

Jordan has already taken an official to UCLA while Ben Howland was coach. Any visit he takes now would have to be unofficial.

Meantime, Monday-Wednesday of next week is an NCAA Quiet Period, meaning recruiting meetings can only take place on campus. From April 4-11 is a Dead Period and no off- or on-campus recruiting can take place.

“Right, so he’s not going anywhere,” Ross said of Jordan’s visits.

Speaking on a conference call with reporters, Alford said his first priority was getting to know UCLA’s current players, and then recruiting afterward.

“I’m not sure as far as recruiting the next couple weeks,” Alford said. “Obviously, the next couple weeks are all about the UCLA players currently on the roster, either incoming student-athletes or the student-athletes that are still there.

“That’s the biggest responsibility because the recruiting rules, being able to go out, aren’t going to open up until about five days after the Final Four. I think it’s the weekend of the 11th. So the emphasis is on who’s there and who’s committed at this particular time.”

Asked specifically about whether he sees Kyle Anderson as a point guard or a forward, Alford added: “I’ve gotta get to know those players. I have to watch a lot of film and a lot of tape to find out. I think that’s a good thing. I’m coming in kind of blind to the situation of not knowing a lot about those players because my entire focus has been on my team and our current players and developing our players.

“Now that changes and I just haven’t any time to change any of that.”

The father of freshman forward Tony Parker also told SNY.tv he’s looking forward to meeting with Alford after he said his son had a bad experience as a freshman under Howland.

It's really quite simple what jets should do .. New GM who excels in player personnel and let him hire his own HC.. Yes players love Rex but that doesn't equate into disciplined consistent winning football.. Let's b honest - Rex is a DC and a great one.. I mean look at Bruce Ariens .. He's winning w multiple backup QBs.. Rex just can't do that bc his defensive bias so over shadows any competence on offense.. This league doesn't win on ground and pound anymore - this isn't the 80's..

Now obviously most blame falls on woody Johnson - I feel he is a terrible evaluater of hiring football people . We can just hope he has quality consultants who can finally find a great GM who can fianally construct a winning blueprint - and yes bring in decent scouts - last draft was terrible.. I honestly think I cld draft better than these clowns

the Giants assistant GM is not bad either, he was a candidate last time

Hey Long-Time NY Jets Fans who know what they are viewing on the field... Show your Support for Rex Ryan as HC of the NY Jets!

Tell Woody to keep Rex Ryan as HC of the NY Jets!

Tell Woody that Rex was the best hire he ever made and to NOT make the very BIG Mistake of firing him.

Drown out the Very Vocal Minority of NY Jets fans calling for his head!

Some how in the world of Media insanity the most important job of a HC in football has be completely lost. Coaches don't draft the players! Coaches don't sign players! Coaches don't make the plays on the field!

Coaches coach & players play!

The # 1 job of a Head Football Coach is to instill confidence in the players on their roster. To get each one of those players to play at 110% of the god given ability that they have.

Rex Ryan does that better than any other coach in the NFL. All the NFL media talking heads say that the NY Jets don't have the talent to compete in this league. Well they are 100% right... at the most important positions the NY Jets don't have enough talent to compete! Who is at fault for that??? The talent selection structure in the Front Office is 100% at fault. Their only job is to fill the roster with quality coachable players! That is there only job and they continue to fail at their one job! Especially at QB, OL & Corner.

In this years draft they fell flat on their face in drafting a WR. Throwing darts at the WR draft board would have netted better results than what was selected! Why didn't they resign Cromartti at corner??? That was a simple fix for another 1 to a few years. Bad QB selection has been going on for decades. The only two QB's that had a shot when drafted were Ken O'Brian & Chad Pennington.

Woody made the right hire with the head coach. He blew or his search firm blew the choice of GM. He also blew keeping long-time talent selection people in the front office. The proof of that is how poor the draft has been over the last 6 years.

So Woody... don't compound the problem by firing the Head Coach. 1: Keep Rex Ryan as head coach of the NY Jets for at least another 5 Years. Give him a new 5 Year Contract and tell the Football world that he is your Coach. This will attract the best quality assistant coaches back into the organization.
2: Fix the talent selection part of the organization once & for all!
3: Don't believe that media created BS that the GM needs to bring in his own head coach. That is just pure media created BS!

I will go this far... as I have been thing about this alot of late. Woody if you fire Rex Ryan... I am done as a Season Ticket Holder... I refuse to go through another complete rebuild. I 100% refuse!

I am a 44 Years Fan of the NY Jets who has watched every play of every game over that span. A season ticket holder in my name from 1978 to 1982 & through a good friend since then til today. If Rex Ryan is fired I am done spending money on the NY Jets!

Please, please, please let this be true. It will probably cause Brendan some heartache but I can't wait to see the Idjit go.

Looking forward to Monday and hoping Woody will do something right for a change.   In a curious way, there may be more optimism about the future of this team now (if dramatic changes come) than at any time in the past three years.

Lesson #1 in finance - admit you made a mistake and cut your losses.  Vegas plays against this and gets people to re-up all the time.  A smart move by Woody to cut losses and start again.  Can get around the stability issue by getting a credible candidate and structuring the right contract.

It's hard to judge Rex fairly.

The passing offense is much worse today than when Ryan took over 6 years ago. It's much worse today than it was 3 years ago. The team uses 1st round picks on defense every year and anybody smart knows that Ryan selfishly supports this even though the offense has been ABYSSMAL.

Nobody denies that Rex is a brilliant defensive coach and that the GM's hired by Woody Johnson have no idea what they are doing from a player personnel perspective - and the draft in particular.

It's a sad situation. The organization is highly dysfunctional and it starts with the owner. Good teams have GM's whose expertise is in player personnel and scouting and Woody Johnson hasn't learned this in 16 years

I've said before that while Rex's players clearly love playing for him it's never been demonstrated that they play better because of him.  Nor is it a rule of thumb that winning teams are those whose HC is beloved by his players.   Is Belichek loved?   Was Parcells?  Landry?  Lombardi?

Rex is a DC, not a HC, and he hasn't grown into the position in six years on the job.   Nor has Rex attracted the top coaches in the league to be on his staff.   Of the current group, only Dunbar excels, and he's had the most talent to work with by far.    The others grade out somewhere between ineffective to awful.

Why would you give a HC who has his track record the last four years, has nurtured the worst offense in the league and an over-rated defense, is inconsistent, often undisciplined, a poor game manager, and poor overseer of in-game adjustments another five years to fix what he's been unable to fix in the last six?

Contrary to the above, I actually like Rex, liked his bravado, his confidence, the way he did motivate his players and make this team relevant again...but he's utterly failed to take his own performance or that of the team to the next level after some initial success, and his teams have gotten progressively worse since.    Now, while it's true that a large portion of the blame for this decline falls to Rex's GM's over the last four years, not all of it can be laid at their clay feet.

Rex, like Geno, like Sanchez, has continued to make the same mistakes in year six that he made in year one, maybe more, and that, more than any other single reason, is why he's going to be unemployed come Monday, and deservedly so.   Time to realize Rex is part of the problem, not part of the solution.   Keep your season tickets.   In a couple years you might be pleasantly surprised you did.

NYJ fans seem to confuse good defensive calls and the ability to motivate players with being a good HC. For a better example of a HC with good defensive pedigree and motivational ability plus the acumen and awareness to be a good HC...look at Pete Carroll. Yes, he had to learn over the years at USC, but he did learn. After 6 years, Rex appears to have grown a bit, but not enough. Blown timeout calls, blown coaching challenges, arguments with his OC on the sidelines, no apparent feel for offensive football or personalities (ask Steve Young). We need a HC, not a glorified DC with a fan friendly personality.

@hazard2012

NOT me after 44 years I am done! NOT going through another complete rebuild! NEVER Again!

Go Rex... Go Atlanta!

Joe S.

lamjones
lamjones

@hazard2012  I think that says more about the impatience of the fan base than the position of the team.  We entered the year with a GM, coach and QB in place and will end the season with none of them.  With the exception of coach we can't get much worse.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Anybody think Woody has figured out after owning the Jets for 16 years that it might help to score points?

Jets pass offense 2012 - 30th ranked

Jets pass offense 2013 - 30th ranked

Jets pass offense 2014 - dead last 32nd ranked

So the Jets can't score but they can play defense. Only problem is Rex is about to get fired. I'm thinking the Jets better hire a good defensive coordinator to replace him.

@hazard2012  Chip Kelly + Mark Sanchez = Losing Streak and NO Playoffs for the Eagles.

Even an Offensive genius can't solve the Sanchez riddle.

Let that be a lesson Jets Fans... TALENT is the problem NOT Coaching!

@hazard2012 All the people who say "I like Rex... But or I love Rex... But" and then go on to kill him are all the same people who in 2009 -2010 who were could not stand him. You all can't hide... I remember well.

@hazard2012 You will be the 1st one crying when Rex takes the Atlanta Falcons to a Super Bowl and wins it!

@psi1 That's minor stuff. Many coaches have that problem including all the Glorified replacements that have been suggested. The Grass is NOT Greener!

Football is simple. If you don't have TALENT at the keys positions you lose games... no coaching is going to solve that HUGE ISSUE!

When you don't have a Top 15 QB, weak on the OL for pass protection & blitz pick up and just flat out bad in the Secondary you can't win games

Rex Ryan will get a new Head Coaching job in a second! He will take another team... Like Atlanta and win a Super Bowl before the Jets ever sniff another playoff game! That will happen and you all will be crying about it!

hazard2012
hazard2012

@lamjones @hazard2012

In actuality, we really had none of those things going into this season, either.  Rex has never grown into becoming anything more than a DC, Idzik has not worked out as a GM up to the task, and Geno was always a very long shot at QB.  Time Woody and Jets fans faced the harsh reality of what and where this team and organization really is and not place faith in castles built of sand.

 @hazard2012

This has nothing to do with loving or hating Rex.   There's no emotion involved.   He's not grown as a HC, not improved, not corrected a single flaw or weakness despite promises to do so.   Why would you think that a coach who cannot improve his own performance can improve his team's?

And you're the one hiding...by not signing your posts.

hazard2012

 @hazard2012

Rex might do well in Atlanta, though I don't think they dump Mike Smith.   Atl has a fully-formed Offense, and Rex should be able really improve their D relatively fast.   That doesn't put them in the SB, however.   I'll take my chances and say the Jets stand a better chance getting to the SB without Rex than with him as HC.

And please put a name to your posts...you either own it or you're just wasting our time.

All true, but we got what we wanted after we had enough of Sanchez and Tanny... anybody but Sanchez at QB and anybody but Tanny at GM.  Optimism for the next guy is warranted, but the optimism comes mostly from the change... we are farther away than we were in July, no matter how much better we'll feel after a cleanup.

@Wolf

 I agree Wolf... People are delusional. Dunbar is gone with Rex.

Wait until all the NY Jets Young Defensive Talent follows Rex to his new team that he is Head Coach for... just as soon as they are free to move on.

Rex to win multiple Super Bowls and all you Rex is just a DC will be the 1st Crying on this board.

If Rex is Fired I am done with that!

Anyone want to Buy Lower Mez Row 4 in the end zone for $1,650 ($125 per game + Lic Fee for 2015)? That's for one can get you 3. Go and watch you great new HC... put your money where your posts are!

Keep Rex Ryan as HC of the NY Jets!

@hazard2012  You don't know what your looking at...

You're just spewing out that Mike Fatsessa garbage!

@hazard2012 That team with an upgraded defense and Rex Ryan ans Head Coach = Multiple Super Bowl Wins. That is a Certainty!

@lamjones

Not sure 'we' wanted Idzik, period, and we all seemed to want and like Rex until he proved he couldn't make that quantum jump from DC to HC.   And it may be that Tanny took the hit for many of Rex's flaws and failures.

But, if...admittedly a BIG IF...Woody puts the right people in the right positions we might be in a better position now than were when Rex was hired six years ago...because a lot of improvement can be made in a relatively short time when the right people are pulling the strings...and we'll be improving ALL phases of the game at the same time, making complimentary moves, not just focusing on bulking up one side of the ball.    .

@hitchhiker Dunbar has no aspirations to be a coordinator -- he has said he loves being a DL coach.

What better place to be than here with this group that loves him?

 If he is not retained by the likely new head coach, "it would hurt a lot," Richardson said. "The reason why I'm (as) productive as I am is because of that man right there and my teammates," Richardson said of Dunbar. "It would just be starting over again. That's what it is. A fresh start for everybody. But who wants that? It's a weird situation, man. "
